This is my reaction paper when I'm in my first year of college, when our teacher assigned us to watch the film, "Hackers Wanted" and write our reaction to it. Just want to share one of my writings. Not that really good though.

HACKERS WANTED

Usually when someone heard the word hacker, the first thing that comes to their mind is someone who breaks in and ruins their private accounts and some unauthorized area on web. But if the word hacker is searched as it where or what is the original meaning, it is not bad as someone usually thinks, originally it is a railroad terminology for those who modify the function of the design of model train in order to hack a better train and to hack is to apply engineerly to create a clever result. “Hackers Wanted” a documentary that discusses the world of hacking, what lead them to hacking, how they think, the relation of the past, ancient civilization, the unjust laws, etc. It is an unreleased American documentary film that was directed and written by Sam Bozzo, narrated by Kevin Spacey. The film includes well known hackers like Adrian Lamo and one of the Deceptive Duo, Robert Lyttle, and other computer experts, Steve Wozniak, Leo Laporte, Kevin Rose, Marcus Ranum,  John Draper, John Arquilla, and Kevin Lee Poulsen.

As I have watched “Hackers Wanted”, there are three points that I have saw, hackers are big threats and can be very dangerous; hackers can be very helpful; and hacking is illegal, whatever the motivation is, whether it caused a damage or not, as long as it is unauthorized. Hackers can be very dangerous, the so called “Black Hats” or can be also called crackers. Just like what happened between India and Pakistan, it worsen the situation, it affect not just individuals, or companies but “countries”. Black hat hackers are the bad guys they make computer viruses, steal money, and even use the computer for terrorism or cyberterrorism. Hacking is helpful, the white hat hackers or the hackers employed by the company to help assure the security of their systems, and the grey hat hackers, mostly of them are patriot hackers or citizens that support their country and block attacks usually from terrorists, just like black hat hackers they are also crackers but unlike the black hats they do not intend to damage the systems they are hacking into. Some hack companies to tell the problems and ask for money but some just want to help, for them to see what they are lacking to. But whatever the motivation is, even though someone wants to help as long as it is unauthorized, it is illegal. Just like Adrian Lamo, who breaks into high security networks just like Yahoo, New York Times, and Microsoft, he also breaks into NBC internal networks within just five minutes. His intensions were just to notify companies of their security flaws but still he was sentenced for six months at his parents’ home. The film, also talks about the relation of the past to hacking.  In ancient times, when you think different, have other theory, also mean putting your life at stake. Those who thinks different are being labeled insane or sometimes criminals. For example, Galileo who had his theory of the earth revolving around the sun, he was sentenced for lifetime imprisonment and there are times that the authorities did not allow visitors. Just like hackers (grey hat hackers), they find some flaws and correct it, to help, to share their knowledge. But with the law they will be sentenced.      

“Hackers are the Heroes of Computer Revolution”. Without them, what is the reason for strengthening network securities?   Just like a baby growing up, we become curious to the things that surround us, we don’t just look at the things we are curious at, we hold those things, try to figure out what it is, how does it work, exploring it. Though there are black hackers who damage, use hacking for bad purposes there are white and grey, that is what they are doing, the whites who works inside cannot see the outside even though they try to think like the black hats, it is still different being actually on the outside, that’s what grey hat hackers do. Adrian Lamo stated, “Maybe it’s not all black and white that somebody can do wrong for a good reason”. But the law is also understandable, how would you differ a black hat hacker from a grey hat hacker. If hacking is legal, grey and black would be the same until something will happen or damage will be done.
